Phulkari ☼: Dear Kaur. →
Phulkari Kaur, you sent chills down my spine. Much love, sister <3
phulkari:
Dear Kaur.
I know. I know it’s hard, trying to fight ideals of beauty and happiness, everyday of your life. I know it’s hard trying to remind yourself that fashion, relationships, and worldliness will only provide temporary happiness. I know it’s hard for you to see others “happy” while they…

We Pledge Orange.
It is a rare and special occasion for which we ever see the entire Sikh panth up in arms and united as one. In the recent days, Balwant Singh Rajoana, our Living Shaheed, has truly made this happen. For this, Rajoana Jee, we are so thankful. We are so inspired. And, as per his selfless request, we are orange.
For those of you who are not as aware of the situation in Punjab right now, I highly...

sikhi, sangat, and sustainability ... part 2 of 2
Note: please see previous post prior to reading this one :)
Fateh Kaurs & Singhs! I am back… but not as excited as I thought I would be. I thought that with a little more introspection, I could find an answer that would be well suited to the questions I posed last time around. However, even after days of processing thoughts and emotions.. I can’t say I’m completely sure as...

Cool post by our dear friend SaintSouljaa-check it ouT!
diwanasingh:
So, I didn’t know that tumblr had an inbox and that someone had asked me a question and that I had not responded to them. My apologies for being a tumblr noob. So here’s the question posed by Anonymous and my response is below it.
“Dear Mr. Saint Soulja, How about a post on relationships? How…

is Sikhi sustainable in the self? -- part 1 of 2
The term “sustainability” is huge these days. Normally, it’s used in the context of environments and projects being able to last beyond this generation or the next; ie) - the ability of something to support or maintain itself for the future. The concept is rather awesome; creating a sustainable society entails prevention, preparation, and security for upcoming generations and...
sardar or sevadaar?
The word ”Sardar” (ਸਰਦਾਰ) is of Indo-Aryan descent, literally meaning “holder of authority”, ie - leader; ruler; in command; a man of power.
The word “Sevadaar” (ਸੇਵਾਦਾਰ) is the opposite. With roots in Sanskrit, the word refers to one who is a servant; one who works without pay; one who puts himself at the bottom of the social ladder.
The words seem to...
turban; a brilliant bold statement
If we were to sum up what the turban meant for the Sikh panth and Panjabi culture, we would probably say that it symbolizes royalty. But the turban/pagh/dastaar is a lot more than just royalty-it’s a sense of courage, a definition of bravery, a statement with conviction, a backbone to faith, a history of a legacy, a people…
Along with all of that, it has now come to make a statement in fashion....
being you-nique by letting go...
For me, being unique isn’t really about being “me” at all…in fact, it’s just the opposite…it’s about letting go of me. I believe Guru Nanak has created a path for me (and all his students) that is totally unique. A path where I must be an activist - help the under-served, defend the oppressed… All while being humble, compassionate, forgiving, and seeing Waheguru’s presence in everyone and...

Fatehhhhh!
Sup homies. It’s been a minute.. our sincerest apologies for our long hiatus. We’re big on this whole quality over quantity thing, so we figured if there’s nothing quality we have to offer, we’d rather not put out articles or posts that would waste your time. Hopefully we have now recuperated and can continue to engage in some useful discussions with you...

perfection at it's finest
As you guys may have seen (you better have!!)..our last “Let GO” post said, “Today, I will let go of trying to be PERFECT - because perfectionists are not rewarded, but those who get things done are”. This post reflects more on the idea that action is better than waiting; we don’t need to wait for the world to set the stage for the “perfect time” or until...

HeyyOo lovers!
It’s been quite a whiile since I put my pen to the paper… or my fingers to the keyboard… and blocked out some reflection time. It’s actually quite unfortunate - I miss it! but here I am again, attempting to salvage any type of brain activity that’s going on behind the scenes and maybe find a glimpse of inspiration for y’all (or moreso, myself)....

big, beautiful, & downright bushy!
Fashion nowadays amazes me. The DOPEST thing about it now is that it’s all about being real. The natural being YOUrself look is considered to be high end these days. SO GUESS WHAT THAT MEANS, HOMEGIRLS (and boys)? Natural thick eyebrows are IN, so say bye bye to those pencil thin eyebrows because they are long gone. In fact, some ladies are trying so hard to bring back their natural brows that...

#BeYOUnique
(Anonymous Kaur 514 rockin’ the Be YOUnique band)
1.) What does it mean to be YOUnique to you and why?
Simple…it means being who YOU are - and staying true to yourself. I have learned over time that in reality, no one really cares about what you’re doing…except for you. So, if you are living life to impress others or live up to others expectations, it’s just not...

“I don’t know what happened, but the kids took my head and banged it into a metallic pole. I just collapsed, and then all those kids ran away. When I got up, my head was throbbing and bleeding.” - Gurwinder Singh, advocate for the Sikh Youth of New York. Before I pour out my thoughts about this issue, I’d like to give all my love, thoughts, and prayers to those who struggle with bullying....

the pull of sangat.
This past week I was so blessed to be surrounded by an amazing sangat while attending a Sikh youth camp (shoutout Camp Chardi Kala NY!)… ages ranged from eight to eighty and yet each and every individual had a lesson to teach or a gunn (virtue) that they embodied. It is so rare to see such beauty… so rare that we are all just in one place, singing keertan of Guru Sahib, wrapped up in a...
Could we be stronger? #neverforget84
Reading about 1984 is like throwing salt on an open wound. Don’t you think? I mean, it hurts…it STINGS so hard. And then you get angry. And then maybe hopeless. Then angry again… and you’re lost and you don’t know what to do.
Then, a few minutes, hours, or days later… it fizzles down and you barely feel it anymore.
Until you decide to throw more salt and read a little more… listen a little more…...
makeup shakeup
I can remember being a little girl and sitting on my parent’s bed, with my older sister, and just watching, as my mother would get ready for special events. My mother was, and is, definitely one of those women who truly have the thing they call natural beauty. On special occasions, perhaps a wedding or dinner party would mom actually put on more than powder and some lipstick. I remember her...

summer style & fashion at the office
Summer-time style and fashion at the office can be a challenge. You yearn to wear sandals and breezy clothes but fear that you may be mistaken for the ‘new intern’ and not the talent powerhouse that you are. While it’s easy to just toss on dress pants and a blouse for the sake of ‘business casual’; there are lots of great creative options that show off your style...
give a little, take a little
You know, sometimes I feel that we in the Sikh community spend a lot of time focusing on certain aspects of our Sikhi and push other, still important (but less evident) parts of it out of our minds. One such example is the idea of “Dasvandh”, giving away one tenth of our wealth in the name of Guru Sahib.
The beauty of Dasvandh is that it isn’t a set “payment” in practice…meaning, it can be 10% of...
boys: how to talk to a lady 101
Gasp! Is KaurStyle really talking about this?! Yeah.. shocker. Let’s get real. It’s the 21st century..people date, relationships evolve and dissipate, and everyone gets jittery about them at times. We’ve kind of noticed that our strong, confident Singhs can get a little (ahem) cold-footed when it comes to talking to the ladies… so we figured we’d help out, maybe...

what do i do?
Have you ever felt like you were the last one standing? It actually isn’t an exhilarating feeling, rather, it’s heartbreaking-and I’ll explain why later. Have you ever felt like your guidance was steered into a direction you didn’t want it to go? That’s not a good feeling either, it’s actually upsetting. I guess what I’m hinting at is…change....

knock me down 'cuz it only makes me stronger
A few days ago, I talked about this challenge to myself - a challenge to stop letting fear get in the way, to allow myself to be free, to allow myself to submit…
And I have already failed. Countless times… I found myself mindlessly talking negatively about others; I found myself unable to control my mind; I found my ego bruised time and time again. And these, might I add, are only the...
